Job Brief

Wildly Inclusive Learning Collective - ALC is dedicated to cultivating an environment where learners can explore and learn at their own pace. Our approach is centered on fostering curiosity, critical thinking, and creativity, encouraging students to take ownership of their learning journey.

WILC ALC is a part-time, self-directed program. For children 5 and older, children will need to be registered homeschoolers under North Carolina’s schooling laws.  

WILC ALC is part of the global Agile Learning Centers model and network, an expression of Self-Directed Education.

Core Qualities Desired

  • Love of children and respect for youth autonomy.

  • Experience working with children, preferably in diverse, learner-centered environments.

  • Competency in conflict resolution and restorative practices.

  • Cultural humility and awareness, with a willingness to question personal or cultural beliefs that may contribute to inequity.

  • Bi-lingual or bi-cultural experience (preferred but not required).

  • Awareness of diverse learner needs, particularly neurodivergent, LGBTQ+, and BIPOC learners.

  • Commitment to continuous inquiry, such as reading, listening to podcasts, or pursuing learning related to self-directed education, child development, and inclusive practice.
     

Responsibilities

Substitute Facilitators are responsible for:

  • Learner Support & Facilitation

  • Providing a safe, inclusive, and supportive environment for all learners.

  • Supporting learners’ autonomy, curiosity, and projects without directing or controlling their process.

  • Offering resources, guiding questions, and encouragement for learner-led projects.

  • Modeling respect, curiosity, and self-directed learning in daily practice.

  • Encouraging and supporting learners in intention setting, reflection, and sharing during daily meetings.
     

Community & Environment

  • Maintaining respectful, supportive communication with staff, parents/caregivers, and learners.

  • Caring for the physical learning space, including cleaning, organizing supplies, and maintaining safety.

  • Assisting with classroom management through restorative practices and scaffolding peer-to-peer conflict resolution.

  • Following all health, safety, and emergency protocols, including fire, lockdown, and weather procedures.

  • Ensuring classroom and common areas are clean and organized at the end of each day in accordance with the Daily Cleaning Policy.

     

Program Participation

  • Supporting Morning and Closing Meetings, including intention-setting, reflection, and community announcements.

  • Participating in substitute coverage with preparedness and adaptability, ensuring continuity of planned offerings or emergent learner interests.

  • Supporting learners in safe and ethical use of technology in line with WILC’s Technology Policy.

  • Collaborating with other facilitators to maintain smooth daily operations and uphold WILC’s core values.
     

Qualifications

  • BA Degree and/or teaching certification

  • Experience and/or desire to learn to work with children, especially those with learning differences.

  • Patience, adaptability, and compassion in varied classroom situations.

  • Strong communication, observation, and teamwork skills.

  • Ability to maintain confidentiality, ethical standards, and professionalism.

  • CPR and First Aid certification (preferred).
